Sea between – photos and maps – Lena Malm & Philippe Rekacewicz
Date and time1 – 31.10.2021
What connects young men playing football on the streets in Egypt at night to Polish, motorcycle-travelling pilgrims in Greece, rug salesmen trying to uphold traditions in a changed world at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar?
A public beach in Beirut, camels moving through contested land in Israel and Palestine and the coast of the city of Melilla on the African continent but on Spanish land that acts as the border to the EU?
The answer to this is the Mediterranean Sea, photographer Lena Malm, cartographer Philippe Rekacewicz and the ERC research project Crosslocations.
In the works exhibited, Lena Malm describes the intersections of various impact zones in the countries connected by the Mediterranean Sea. Malmi’s work with Crosslocations is a unique experiment of connecting professional photography to the five-year work of a multilocation ethnographic research group.
Cartographer Philippe Rekacewicz has explored questions about what the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea is truly like and what goes on there, applying different scales and various perspectives. The map project’s purpose is to present complex interconnections in a simple and understandable way.
The exhibition has been moved due to coronavirus situation from spring to autumn 2021.
