The pursuit of comfort has had a major impact on the development of fashion for the past hundred years. Dress codes have become less formal, and clothing more
relaxed and significantly more comfortable to wear.
The humble T-shirt, once an undergarment, has become one of the most widely-worn pieces of clothing in the world, with leggings posing a challenge to trousers. Items of clothing that used to be worn only out of sight, as undergarments or at home, have become a part of everyday fashion.
The Finnish design brand Nanso turns 100 this year. As specialists in clothing and home textiles, the company’s history is deeply intertwined with these fashion trends.
The Comfort Revolution exhibition will examine changes in the way people dress through nightwear, undergarments and lounge wear, and how these changes reflect social developments and phenomena. The themes of comfort and
wellbeing are explored through Nanso’s collections and historical archives.
