G.Bizet: Carmen suviyössä – OperArte ry
Carmen suviyössä starts from the Kultakivi midsummer fest of 1979 in Punkaharju. Don José (Kimmo Turunen/Antti Tolvanen) can’t stop thinking about the wild Carmen (Mari Hautaniemi), and is driven into a trap of endless passion and convulsive jealousy. His girlfriend Mikaëla (Pirjo Leppänen) tries to turn his head around but is bound to failure.
Carmen suviyössä is a saga of an independent, bold, unique, and contradictory woman in a male-dominated Kekkonen-era Finland where midsummer bonfires blaze and cassette players stream out punk and rockabilly music while the Village People sing about the YMCA. Carmen’s faith in human freedom and autonomy is solid and burning, like the blistering hot motorway.
The music of Georges Bizet’s popular opera is sung in its original French, while the spoken scenes take place in Finnish. The show is subtitled in Finnish and Swedish.
