Bluejacket Tunes - History of the Finnish Navy Band
The Finnish Navy Band has reached the very respectable age of 100 years, and the long, colourful and successful history is celebrated in Suomenlinna. You can visit the exhibition at the Suomenlinna Museum, and some of the exhibits are on display at the tourist information at the Jetty Barracks.
The band has over the century of its existence performed at a large variety of different events, everything from state functions to “Tattoo” events and marching concerts, from evening prayers to restaurant gigs and school visits. The wide range of music rehearsed and played by the Navy Band is incredibly extensive. The work as a military musician is indeed, according to the musicians themselves, the most versatile profession a musician could ever imagine.
The maritime centre Forum Marinum in Turku has created an exhibition where the colourful and multifaceted story of the band is brought out to the public in both tone and pictures. The exhibition highlights the history of the band in form of texts, pictures and objects. The exhibition has been built in co-operation with the Navy Band, and it is based on the history book Puhallamme elämyksiä (‘We blow experiences’) by Kauko Karjalainen.
