Once again, cultural centres around Helsinki offer music, theatre, dance, circus, films and exhibitions to people of all ages this spring – for an affordable price or free of charge.

We highlighted five things to do and see, check them out!

1. Top notch gigs from rap to rock

Malmitalo pampers visitors with live music. Would you like to see DJ Kridlokk + Ex Tuuttiz (7 Feb), the Middle Eastern Ensemble (14 Feb), The Animals (15 Apr) or Emma Salokoski & Jarmo Saari Duo (2 May)?

The wildly popular Global Club Nights celebrate music at Cultural Centre Caisa. In the spring, Nei ZIGMA and Los Fabulosos (28 Feb) as well as Baraka Issabu – African Child and Why So Shy? (14 Mar) will be taking the stage. The programme also includes children’s concerts and two club nights in Kanneltalo.

Quality performances are also available in East Helsinki: We Jazz mini festival artists AINON and The Stance Brothers will perform at Stoa (1 Feb), and Arja Saijonmaa (14 Feb), Wishamalii & Sointi Jazz Orchestra (3 Apr) and Johanna Försti (17 Apr) will hit the Vuosaari House stage.

2. Meditation journey and fearless circus acts

Metal Meditation offers a celebration of exceptional ambient music: Two hypnotic works of art will premiere in Kanneltalo on 1 February. First we will experience the vibrating Pulsance by Jonna Eiskonen and Ilmari Heikinheimo, then Tapani Rinne and Teho Majamäki take us on a minimalist meditation journey.

Friends of contemporary circus are in for comical situations and breathtaking circus tricks when the Tattarmossen Experience by the Race Horse Company arrives in Stoa on 25 and 27 April. In Caisa you can experience Tonton Triet (28–30 March), which is a combination of dance and couple technique, contemporary circus and physical theater with live music.

3. Fun outdoor activities

On Valentine’s Day 14 February, a sparkling heart-shaped snow castle will be built as a joint effort on the Ylä-Malmi square.

A celebration of winter and Shrovetide will be held on Stoa square on Sunday 2 March, come rain or snow! A wintry DJ will be putting a spring in the step of outdoor people of all ages, Vilma Jää will heat up the atmosphere, a miniature ice sculpture park will be created and the barbeque will be sizzling.

The programme details will be published closer to the event. Free entry!

4. Hurraa! Take a child to theatre

The performing arts theatre event for children and young people, Hurraa!, will be organised in cultural centres on 14–26 March.

The programme includes 14 performances, such as the Pizza Pizza Karagöz puppet theatre performance at Annantalo, the A Fistful of Funk street dance performance by the Will Funk For Food group at Stoa and the Avain hukassa performance by the Musiikkisirkus group at Vuosaari House.

5. Films for people of all ages

Cultural Centre Caisa’s cinema Kino Caisa brings carefully selected films examining the diversity of humanity from different perspectives to the screen on Tuesdays. The films are presented in English, either spoken or subtitled.

At Malmitalo, visitors can enjoy films in the recently renovated Kino Helios, which offers affordable screenings of new films and classics. Free screenings are also organised once a month!

Don’t forget Skidikino events in Vuosaari House and Stoa as well as free-of-charge screenings at Kanneltalo and Maunula House.
